A Legacy Of Greymouth
Originally built by Irish Catholics at the close of the 19th century, this magnificent building began its life as St. Patrick’s Presbytery. Grand in both scale and spirit, it stands as a lasting testament to the enduring presence and strength of the Catholic community in Greymouth. With its striking architecture and commanding presence, the building has become a true landmark that is visible from countless vantage points across the town and surrounding hills.
The Story Begins
The story of our beloved hostel began back in 1989 under the name Pavlova Backpackers, and after receiving official consent in 1991, it opened its doors and offered weary travelers a warm retreat for nearly a decade.
In 1995, a unique chapter began to unfold when the talented artist A.D. Hobson started visiting — and some say even lived here. Inspired by the hostel's cozy charm, Hobson brought his creative vision to life by painting animals on the walls of each room, giving birth to the fabled theme of Noah’s Ark Backpackers. These iconic murals remain a testament to the creative spirit that continues to thrive here. If you look around you will find work of other artists have added their own paintings during their time at the hostel.
Over the years, a variety of passionate owners have embraced the role of caretakers, each adding their personal touch to the space. Now, with great excitement and a sense of responsibility, our family is honored to continue the legacy with a fresh new chapter under our ownership.
The Flashpacker Era
During the winter of 2025, Noah’s Ark underwent a transformation. Once a cozy presbytery welcoming travelers of all kinds, it was reborn as Greymouth’s very first flashpacker.
We kept the warmth, charm, and character of the original building—the high ceilings, vintage woodwork, and sunny garden plus added a new spirit: Stylish, modern comfort for adventurous travelers. Basic or Flash Dorms, Private rooms, Boutique-style rooms, and even tent sites cater to every budget and travel style.
From its historic walls to the welcoming lounges, Noah’s Ark isn’t just a place to sleep anymore—it’s a flashpacker’s home on the West Coast, ready to host your next adventure.
Our mission is simple: to offer a warm and welcoming sanctuary for all travelers from every corner of the world—a place to relax, connect, and create lasting memories.
We can’t wait to welcome you to your home away from home.
With warmth,
Wayne Family
